2004 Job Shadow

Mission

The legislative Job Shadow Experience is dedicated to exploring public service and legislative careers with high school students who demonstrate gifts in leadership within their communities. Delegate Kris Amundson has organized the program for the past three years, and with the generous support of Cox Communications, has been able to vastly expand the experiences of the participants.

Purpose

· Introduces high school students to careers in legislative government and public service
· Encourages relationships between talented high school leaders and mentors dedicated to public service
· Acknowledges to the community the contributions and high potential of the talented high school leaders
· Demonstrates to the talented high school leaders the connections between practical work experience, academic excellence, extracurricular participation and the importance of developing one’s potential

Project

Each student will create an individual study project to investigate some aspect of the legislative process. Students will meet for an orientation meeting on Saturday, January 17 at 1:00 PM at Sherwood Regional Library. At that time, they will refine the projects that they plan to pursue. They will also meet with Delegate Amundson on March 20 at 1:00 PM at Sherwood Regional Library to present their completed projects.

Participants

Students selected for this program must be high school juniors or seniors who live or attend school in the 44th District. (They can use the “Who’s My Legislator?” button on the Virginia General Assembly web site at http://legis.state.va.us to see if their home or school lies within the boundaries of the 44th.) There will be no cost to the students for this program, other than incidental expenses. We will provide students with transportation, lodging, and all meals, including dinner on Sunday through lunch on Tuesday. FCPS has approved this program.

Applications are taken in early January for consideration
